Features
  • Racing / Training facilities
  • Immediately beyond the house lies a traditional stable yard, built around the same time as the main house and with a range of single storey and lofted stone buildings comprising 14 stable boxes and a service suite of rooms with a washroom, tack room and grooms canteen. Also situated to the rear of this yard is a groom’s cottage (3 rooms) and a substantial upper lofted area could possibly be converted into added accommodation if desirable. Lying immediately adjacent to this yard and with direct access to The Curragh lies a second more substantial yard with 3 stable blocks offering 24 additional stables boxes and 8 large open pen / yearling boxes, a stud office, lunging ring and electric indoor horse walker. Within this complex there is also an all-weather ménage (60 x 40 metres with sand / pvc mix) and 3 hay barns, one with a lean-to giving a lorry garage.
  • A purpose built foaling yard (c.1940) comprises 4 large boxes and is serviced by a tea room, 2 groom’s living / sleeping rooms and a veterinary inspection room with fitted stocks, all linked to the stables by an indoor passageway. An adjacent building has a tack room and separate Wc.
  • Enjoying a great position on the Curragh of Kildare access to both the Curragh racecourse and any of the areas equine associated facilities are within easy reach, as are most locations within Ireland from the nearby M7. Within a half mile hack of the yard is the recently renovated Maddenstown grass gallop, while also nearby is a woodchip gallop. In all there are 7 miles of all-weather gallops and 19 miles of grass gallops within easy reach of the yard, giving varying gradients and a variety of surfaces to train over. Training jump fences are about a 20 minute hack away.
  • Aside from the notable equine successes enjoyed by Brownstown House and Stud it also enjoys a rich tapestry of owners from a Captain Candrell, who is recorded as breeding and training at Brownstown in 1802, to the well known and successful Knox, Greer, Myerscough and McGrath racing families. The most recent owners uniting two of Ireland’s great equestrian families through marriage, the highly acclaimed McGrath family in the racing tradition and the Conolly Carew family equally acknowledged for their eventing prowess. ‘Yellow Earl’, bred locally, was trained at Brownstown and represented Ireland at two Olympic Games, while her brother who also trained at Brownstown qualified for the Atlanta games. Indeed, many International competitions have been attended by Brownstown bred and trained horses including the European and World Equestrian Games and Badminton Horse Trials.
